Justice Minister Judith Collins on the Right Track with Datalab

Justice Minister, Hon Judith Collins, thrills the Sensible Sentencing Trust with her comments in regards to the Justice Sector Annual Report becoming more readily available to the public and the launch of a new exciting Datalab tool.

“This is a fantastic move by the Minister that will help restore transparency in the sector and give the general public more faith in our justice system,” Ruth Money, SST Spokesperson says.

The Datalab tool was launched along with the release of the 2013 Justice Sector Annual Report as a tool enabling easier access to Ministry of Justice data. This will make it much easier for people to access information that is currently spread across various sources.

“This will make finding the information, and understanding the information, much easier,” Money says. “It’s a win, win for everyone.”

Datalab will be a useful tool for students, journalists and other members of the public. The research is based on many variables such as the region or type of offence. The website will also contain graphics displaying results and trends.

“This will be a fantastic tool for all those wanting to research crime and justice.  The more educated the public are about law and order in NZ the more the wider community can assist with crime prevention and public safety” said Money.

In a press release Hon Collins said; “The sector will continue to build on these results, seeking innovative and effective ways to better support vulnerable people and families, tackle the causes of crime and stop people – particularly young people – from entering a life of crime.”
