SST Applauds Minister Collins Name Suppression Views

Sensible Sentencing Trust Spokesperson Ruth Money said today’s comments from Justice Minister Collins about name suppression are “a breath of fresh air and should be applauded”.

The ODT today reported that Minister Collins stated “In situations where a victim of sexual abuse feels comfortable about having details made publicly available, I’m strongly of the view that it should be encouraged in the wider interests of open and transparent justice.”

This view is totally in line with SST’s Stop the Suppression Campaign says Money. “Permanent name suppression should only ever be granted when a victim requests it and should only stay in place for as long as the survivor wishes”

“We invite Minister Collins to urgently remedy the current law that her predecessor Simon Power passed.  In its current state, it allows the offender to effectively gag their victim, which in our view is institutional revictimisation.  The law needs urgent amendments to allow for victims to unsuppress their name and in doing so unsuppress the offenders name automatically and at no cost to the victim.”

“We look forward to working with the minister on this initiative” states Money.
