Introduction … A blog for Victims…And holding our protectors accountable

Welcome to Sensible Sentencing Trust Youth Blog.

This has been created to inform the public of the intentions of the government and the Justice Advisory Group.

We will inform you of upcoming decisions , concerns SST have , Victims issues and current and upcoming cases that we are aware of.

Since Labour came into government our minister of Justice has made a promise to correct the Broken Justice System.

We initially were very interested , we thought brilliant they have finally heard our Victims voices!!

But we were wrong! Andrew Little announced he wants to reduce the prison population by 30% , get rid of the Three Strikes legislation ,see greater use of restorative justice and amend the bail act.

Andrew Little held a Criminal Justice Summit in Wellington to start the “conversation ” , this summit turned out to be purely about the offenders.

We heard stories about how offenders have been wronged by the justice system , how their life has been destroyed by the charges laid upon them , and how they are a victim of the system.

What we did not hear was any remorse for the crimes they committed! We did not hear any accountability for their crimes.

Since the summit the situation has got worse , stories are being released how sentences have victimised the offender, blame is being putting on everything from government , public , colonisation and learning disabilities. Emotion has been applied to the stories of the offenders , but theirs crimes and severity of there offending are not mentioned.

While we do agree the learning disabilities through out the country has a horrendously high rate we do not agree with the fact that this is now being used as an excuse for rape , murder , or any violent or serious offense.

Through all of this process the REAL victims are being sidelined , especially by the head of the Justice Advisory Group Chester Burrows , who recently at one of the regional Huis he attended said that by pro- longing trials there is the hope a victim will give up, get tired of waiting and move on with their life.!

He also advised the media and Andrew Little to remove all emotion from the decision making in the reform of the justice system.

With an approach like that it is clear this new reformed justice system is criminal friendly only.

To Mr Little and Mr Burrows – emotion can not be removed from the horror victims have to go through , no one can remove the emotion from the pain they have to live with daily. And we challenge an explanation as to why you think it is ok to have emotion in stories for the offenders but to remove the emotion when it comes to their Victims!
